Temporary things and eternal things

While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:18

People tend to set goals related to temporary things: obtain academic degrees, get a particular type of job, have a certain economic position, start a family, participate in certain social relationships, enjoy specific goods, experiences and comforts. These goals define the direction of their life. The degree to which they succeed or fail to fulfill them also determines the evaluation they make of their existence and the level of satisfaction they experience in relation to it.

It follows from Paul's words that the Christian's perspective must be different. The objective of the believer is his spiritual growth; being formed in the image of Christ for the glory of God the Father. Temporary circumstances only constitute the setting or environment in which such growth takes place. The day-to-day affairs that often capture our attention and influence our state of mind are not really ends in themselves. They are the means that God uses to influence us in specific ways.

Let us pray to the Lord to direct our gaze towards eternal things so that our life is guided by the essential, rather than the accessory.
